‘When you do something you feel vocationally drawn to, it is not like a job. It is your raison d’etre. It is the reason to wake.’
I would be lying if I said that I had come up with that fantastic quote – Billy Connolly did. However, I can confidently say that I have been lucky enough to have lived out that quote because of my involvement with Vision Generation (VGen) and World Vision over the last 5 – 6 years.
It is on that note that I write to inform you that as of today, I will be stepping down from my formal role with VGen (as National Director). Over the last number of years, I have had the privilege of leading the VGen movement both within Victoria and nationally. During this time, I have had the opportunity to see first-hand World Vision’s amazing work overseas and travel extensively around Australia. These experiences have shaped the advocate I have become and the fuelled the passion that reminds me that we really can make the world a better place for the poor. Most importantly, I have had the honour of working alongside some of the most passionate and driven World Vision staff and VGenners – your dedication and relentless pursuit for social justice is a constant source of inspiration. You are all absolutely incredible!
It is not just my passion for being the change the world needs to see that has kept engaged with World Vision. The range of personalities, characters and the subsequent friendships that have formed are equally important to me and I know I could not have achieved anything without you all. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the following people: Paul Newnham – for your constant support, energy and encouragement since Day 1, along with the amazing Youth Marketing Team –the supportive team at the Victorian State Office who have been instrumental in VGen’s development and a constant support, as well as Rob Waddell – Fiona Mcleay – for your constant guidance, wisdom and passion – Tim Costello – for your warmth, genuine passion and commitment to social justice - Sue Dean and Robyn Lewis for your commitment to VGen leadership and development and your constant personal support, Susan Mizrahi, Andrew Hassett and Jo Watson and the Campaigns/Advocacy Team for your faith in VGen’s ability to inspire change, as well as your genuine passion for the cause.
For those that have shaped the VGen movement over the past few years across Australia – state directors, as well as executive teams past and present – what a journey! I will continue to be inspired by those that have campaigned passionately and relentlessly for a better, more just and equitable world for the poor by being involved in VGen. I would like to personally thank Chris Varney, Mark Cox, Brett Woods, Dave Carbines, Shae Spry – your personal support, leadership and vision for VGen and the world is the reason I do what I do.
Activists –long term and experienced or just starting out. You are the people that excite me the most. You are everyone’s kind of everyday hero – everyone’s favourite kind of person. Just keep going – if you don’t, who will?
